Mmmm headcanons... of the Minecraft variety

1) Steve and Alex's eyesight in the dark, although they're not completely capable of night vision, is still way better compared to a regular human's IRL. Although still dark and hard to make out details, they can still see in what would otherwise be pitch-black caves.

1a) Herobrine just has straight up night vision. It helps when your eyes are flashlights.

2) Steve shaves with an axe, and began to shave around the time he still made axes double-bladed (this is part of what convinced them to change the recipe to single-bladed). Alex pointed out they can use shears instead, but it's just what they're used to at this point.

3) Why shave? Steve kind of associates the beard with whatever his old life was, as he first woke up with the beard. The first few times he shaved were a means of accepting his new life. Now it's kinda just habit.

3a) Of course, he doesn't really have any memories of the Old World or what he was even like as a person, but the what-ifs still give him pause at times.

3b) Alex sometimes convinces Steve to grow it out. They always eventually start to shave it again, though.

4) Alex sometimes calls Steve "Stevie."

5) Herobrine likes the glow and particles of redstone. In fact, they actually have the ability to activate redstone through mere presence (though only to a power of two), which they take advantage of to watch the powered dust.

6) Steve will be trying to figure something out redstone-wise and Alex will come by and start trying to advise him while speaking in redstone jargon.

6a) Steve: "What's a quasi-connectivity? Alex, you're scaring me."

✨ This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don't like it when people classify the original Herobrine as a Creepypasta.

✨ Sure, he seems scary and does things that might creep you out at first, but I don't think he was really meant to be "scary" in the way other Creepypastas are. I mean, most of the other fandom loved CPs are scary because they hurt people and sometimes do scary things, like Slenderman and Jeff.

✨ But Herobrine? If nothing else, he strikes me as curious and just wanting to interact with someone when all he had was himself to keep company. I think the only reason some people think of him as being mean and scary is because of things like the original Herobrine mod for one of the old versions of Minecraft.

✨ Sure, he seems scary, but I don't think he's really trying to purposely bring harm to people unless they try to hurt him first. Even then, I think it's self defense.

✨ Just judging from the original story and screenshot, and the fact that he's basically become kinda canon (The "Removed Herobrine" message), I don't really like when people classify him in the same vein as weird supernatural creatures and killers.

✨ Besides, he has no personality and nothing else to classify him "canonly," and so that's why everyone has their own version of him, like my boy Brine. CPs like Jeff and Slenderman has established habits and lore and personalities, where as Herobrine is pretty much free reign!

✨ But that's just my opinion.

supermario

I do agree that there is a definite split between the original Herobrine mythos and the resulting fan-made mythos. My thoughts:

Considering just the original story itself, Herobrine isn't that malicious of an entity. He never actually harms the player, and the most he does is grief, but even his griefing isn't that bad. He rids trees of leaves? It's easy to just chop them down and replant saplings. He digs 2-by-2 holes? Those aren't gonna be seen on the surface, and those will actually benefit you by exposing ores. The most he does is watch––observe. That can be a little scary, though, because that brings up the question of why? And for what purpose?

Also interesting in the original mythos is the implication that Herobrine isn't limited to Minecraft, or at least to the game itself––he has a presence in the Minecraft Forums and knows when someone posts about him. Still, even with this power he seems to have, the most he does is shut down conversation about him. He doesn't want to be talked about.

And then of course there's the whole bit about him being the dead brother of Notch. It's just an odd addition to the story––it really doesn't fit. Fun fact, I checked, and it seems like Herobrine came out a month before the Ben Drowned creepypasta, which really made the "dead person haunting a game" idea popular.

As for the fan-made mythos, although it's been a while since I've consumed Herobrine media, I've never really seen usage of Herobrine's ability to be outside the game––he is viewed as an entity of the game, not that outside of it. This is also where he gained his connection to the Nether, because at his original conception, the Nether didn't even exist. And, of course, this is where he gained his real scare factor. The fan-made rumors painted him as malicious, seeking to torment, harm and kill the player in a game of cat-and-mouse. He is seen observing the player, but in the fan-made creations involving him, this was framed more as stalking and terrorizing the player.

So we have a huge divide: the original as an observer versus the fan-made as a tormentor.

I will admit that I do see the original mythos as creepypasta, as it was a "copy-paste"––a digital story told over and over again, an urban legend founded on the webs. And I feel like the implication that Herobrine is a dead person haunting the game is an attempt at horror, and thus qualifies it as a creepy copy-paste––a creepypasta. I will admit though that this is taking a more traditional view of the label, and if you were to just look at the original story, it doesn't fit along with the classic (or modern) creepypastas. Really, what made Herobrine scary was all the fan-made mythos, so the fan-made mythos is definitely more so creepypasta material than the original mythos.

Again, as you stated, Herobrine is definitely up for interpretation, as has been made clear by his popularity gained by the fan-made mythos rather than the original. I've probably made it clear I don't like the idea of him being a dead guy haunting the game, so I've cut that out of my interpretation of him. And we're all the better with different interpretations of Herobrine, because how else would we have trans Herobrine with better pants?

kinghelios33

⭐️ You articulated what I was basically talking about way better than I did! I basically cut the whole “dead guy haunting the game” thing out of mine as well, because I felt like took something important away from Herobrine being in Minecraft itself and almost being like an entity of the game instead of just haunting it.

⭐️ However I do make some slight throwbacks to some of those things in Brine’s story! Like how he’s the younger sibling of my queen of the Gods of Minecraftia, Iraura, a.k.a. my replacement for the creator of Minecraft who shall not be named. And Brine also rules the Nether for a while in my story.

⭐️ As much as I love the mythos of Herobrine, some things with it and with the fan made mythos just don’t seem to fit very well with the original story very well. I think honestly? Herobrine is meant to be just an entity with a purpose unknown to us within Minecraftia. Whether or not we will ever know that purpose is yet to be seen.

⭐️And yesssss, trans Herobrine with better pants is the best!

Majestic Dancer

Dorthy: "Jewel is into ballet, as I've discovered. She's been doing it for a few hundred years now, and she wanted to show some of it to me and Velvet."

Jewelavyn stops the spinning she had been doing, before opening one eye at Dorthy and petting the Fluffle in their arms with one hand.

Jewelavyn: "Well, thank you for indulging me, Dorthy. You truly are wonderful for being so kind to me and letting me share my passion with you and Velvet."

🩰🩰🩰🩰🩰

[I really wanted to draw Jewel in her ballet outfit that one of my friends drew for me a long time ago (seen here). I figured that, with her passion for ballet, she would probably share it with Dorthy and their new TeaBlossom Fluffle, Velvet!

I'm really proud of how this came out, I've been in a bit of a slump and drawing this helped a lot. ;w;]

Three different pieces of colored but unshaded fan art of Minecraft. (Right) Herobrine stands upright, their head at a tilt as they look toward the viewer. (Upper left) Alex points at Herobrine to her left, who has the same white eyes but now looks like Alex. The real Alex is excited as she says,

Three colored sketches.

Math, these are so cute, I'm gonna cry. I love how you draw them all and the colors are perfect. 😭😭😭

Even though I mainly play Java Edition and I grew up watching Minecraft mod showcases, I have never actually downloaded and played a mod. I've considered using datapacks before but it's also just like... which one?

I have used texture/resource packs in the past, however (and still do). But nowadays it's for minor things (I have the Vanilla Tweaks enchantment glint, rainbow XP bar and rainbow enchantment symbols resource packs currently in use).

kinghelios33

I was the same sorta way growing up! I watched a lot of mod showcases from a Youtuber I used to watch named SkyDoesMinecraft, but to my surprise, I only ever tried one mod that I heard about from IHasCupquake:

The Minecraft Comes Alive Mod!

I made custom skins for that mod so some of the villagers would look like my OCs and I could hang out with them! It was really fun! Since my skin is based on my OC Celina, I'd make a villager to look like her husband, Cenlar, and marry him so they could be married.

My favrotie texture pack from when I played on Xbox Minecraft was the plastic pack! I thought that one was really cute, but I haven't been able to find a similiar one for Java.

supermario

I watched SkyDoesMinecraft as well! (Apparently he changed his channel's name to Sky Does Everything, interestingly enough.) I feel like I mainly watched DanTDM, though.

I didn't watch much of IHasCupquake, but I did watch one series of hers that featured a lot of mods, including the Minecraft Comes Alive Mod... Oasis something I think the series was called? The mod is interesting, and I think it's still around (not too sure, though).

kinghelios33

Omg, I have NEVER met anyone else who watched Sky since I was in middle school! And yeah, that was the name of the series that Cupquake had! I watched a few episodes of it!

My brother used to watch DanTDM!!! My brother was actually the one who introduced me to Minecraft when Bedrock used to be Pocket Edition! And the main Youtuber we watched together was CaptainSparklez! I know he still does Minecraft videos, and I really enjoy the stuff he still makes.

I looked up the MCA mod, but looks like it hasn't been updated for a couple of years. I really enjoyed that mod!

🔥 One of my favorite headcanons of mine for Minecraft is that the reason Blazes spin their rods around themselves is because they do it to circulate oxygen! They're fire creatures, and fires need oxygen to burn! I imagine the air in the Nether is very thin with all the heat and fire, so Blazes spin their rods around themselves to keep their oxygen up. Many Minecraftians who visit the Nether will often kill a Blaze by taking out their Blaze rods, because if they don't have enough to circulate their air, they suffocate.

Waterfall Art Meme!

I saw this and after @supermario drew Celina for his, I knew I just had to do it!

So, here's my turn! I included a few of my favorite most recent pieces and drew Math's Ende for the part where you draw someone's OC! I tried to go off of her profession and where she lives since Math didn't describe her current appearance. <3

Thank you to @jellyenvy for making this meme! It was really fun!!!

Steve, Alex and Herobrine headcanons, mostly explaining backstory/characterization and what-not

Steve

  • The only one who was part of, for lack of a better term, the Old World.
  • They don't really remember much of anything about it, although they recall a bit more than when they first awoke with basically no memory. He has the vague knowledge there used to be more of him––that is, more players.
  • He also remembers the ships. And the fire.
  • (Specifically, I'm referring to that one biome that generated in the infinity snapshot that was a fleet of end ships. Y'know, the ones that also had orders like "cut," "obliterate," etc.? Yeah.)
  • Steve hasn't explained anything of the Old World to Alex, and hasn't said much of what his life was like prior to meeting Alex. He isn't ready to.
  • They have a degree of caution with just about everything. While Alex is totally fine with taking some fall damage from a few 4-block drops, Steve tries to find a path that avoids said damage––even if it's a very long and inconvenient path.

Alex

  • They've only ever been a part of the New World––that is, the recovering world after something destroyed essentially everything of the Old World. Alex just thinks this is how the world's always been.
  • They take a lot of new info with a shrug and "Okay!", even in the case when Steve introduced them to Herobrine. Everything is new to them, so there isn't a lot that strikes them as not belonging/illogical.
  • That doesn't mean she's naïve, though. She's cautious with any new mob she comes across, and is very good at determining if there's any hostility. She also recognizes that Steve avoids talking about life prior to their meeting.
  • She's outgoing and likes hanging out in villages. She can't understand the villagers and vice versa, but they can still have something like a conversation.
  • Her favorite weapon is the trident with Riptide. Fork go whoosh.

Herobrine

  • They're very quiet and rarely speak. Mostly, they just observe.
  • They sometimes try to do things that Steve does, like mine and farm. They don't totally understand the purpose of why Steve does these things, though, and so they end up with extensive 2 × 2 mines that leave behind all the ores and leafless trees as they think mining anything foliage-wise is farming.
  • They got better about it once Steve took the time to explain why. Now Steve and Alex will find random small farms (wheat, potato, carrot) about the world.
  • They're a manifestation of loneliness, of wanting to be seen, of wanting someone to mine and build with, of wanting someone to share food with––of the universe wanting anybody else, when all the universe had was itself.
  • They spend a good amount of time in the Nether, watching lava bubble in the lava seas. They find it calming.

🌳 These are their skins in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They're obviously shapeshifters and can appear however they want to whoever they want! That's why Steve and Alex's skin tone varies from artist to artist! :0c

[Arc 1 | Part 1] Unwell

Celina looks at Brine with worry, feeling her brows furrowing.

Celina: "Brine, lean on me, okay? I know you're not feeling very strong right now."

Brine nodded, putting his weight against his wife to support himself.

Brine: "I... I hope this goes away soon. I feel horrible."

Celina: "I know, Brine. I'll help you get better, okay?"

💫💫💫💫💫

[Hi, guys! As you could see in my previous posts, I'm using Minecraft screenshots for backgrounds! I think this is working out pretty well.

Anyways, we're gonna start our first little event/arc! :D Feel free to interact as we get further! Even if you don't have any OCs, you can send asks!]

I'm starting my first little arc over on my Minecraft blog! Looks like Brine isn't feeling too well! :0

A Big World Out There

[I had said it over on my main blog here that I've been struggling a lot with backgrounds as of late in my Minecraft art. I had seen an old friend of mine do this, but I've decided to use Minecraft screenshots I take as backgrounds! :D

Here's something I did of Celina, Steve, and Brine as a test for it!

I wonder what Celina's talking about? :0c]

In Hell I'll Be In Good Company

supermario

A bit of an outdated headcanon used in this fic, but hey.

Fandom: Minecraft

Summary: While in a Nether Fortress, Steve contemplates a Wither skeleton.

Rating: Rated T for Teens

Warnings: Some violence; Discussion of death; Death of a mob

Genre: Angst

Word Count: 623

The cobblestone blocks placed across the four hallways that crossed each other did exactly what Steve had intended. A withered skeleton, its bones blackened and twisted and barely held together, caught sight of Steve where he sat cross-legged in the middle of the four hallways, and rushed toward him. Its bones made a dull clatter against the stone as it ran straight into it, its eye sockets peering above the one-and-a-half-block high wall. Steve canted his head up, and the two stared at each other.

Steve grunted as he stood up, still gazing at the creature. He found it odd how passive the mobs would become once they realized they couldn't get to him––he would even say they looked peaceful, curious, examining him like he did with them. But he also knew the moment the wall was down, the mob wouldn't hesitate to kill him.

"You gonna stay there?" he asked.

Of course, just like every other mob, even with the intelligent testificates and piglins, the Wither skeleton didn't understand him. It simply watched him.

He raised his diamond sword, making it gleam in the light of the lava source in the middle of the room. "You know I've killed thousands of you, right?"

It mindlessly opened and closed its jaw, showing off its few remaining hole-ridden teeth.

He lowered the weapon, his faraway gaze dropping to the floor. "And you've killed thousands of me."

It clattered, and Steve took it as acknowledgment of his words.

"You don't know that, though," he continued. "As far as you know, this is the first time you've ever seen me."

He paused a beat, eyeing the creature. It was a miracle it could even stand, let alone walk and run. Its bones looked brittle enough that Steve could just reach over and snap any with ease. It would be a bad idea, however; instantly, whatever had overtaken the skeleton would seep into Steve's skin and make his muscles feel like they were being chewed into. He knew how painful it was to die that way.

A pang of guilt and pity hit Steve. "I know words don't really mean much to you anymore, but I'm sorry this is what you've become. I... I really am."

It said nothing in return.

"Maybe... Maybe I can make it up to you. One day." He let out a long sigh. "Another world. Not this one. The world, not just this one, it's still so... damaged. It's recovered so much, but it still needs to heal." Steve glanced to the right hallway, which opened up to reveal hundreds of blocks of Nether wastes. A distant grumble emanated from the red fields.

He then closed his eyes, took a breath and opened them again, raising his sword once more. "Well, I have a temporary solution for now, at least."

One sideways swing was all it took for its skull to fly off, its body crumbling and breaking off into soot and ash. Surprisingly, the skull didn't turn to ash, and instead clanked against the brick flooring and rolled, stopping next to the hallway wall. Steve raised a brow as he took down the wall and made his way to the skull, bending down to look at it. As the Wither skeleton was dead, its withering effect had died with it, letting Steve pick its skull up without any pain.

Steve stared into its sockets. "It has been a while since I've defeated the Wither," he mused. "I guess you could consider that another temporary solution."

Knowing that it truly wasn't a solution at all to the world's hurt, he tucked the skull underneath his arm and began his walk out of the fortress, thinking of the past the whole while.

Some more (s'more?) SSBU Steve and Alex headcanons

(The first two bullets imply past animal death, if you want to avoid that.)

  • Steve forfeited a match once they saw their opponent was the Duck Hunt Duo. They've refused matches against the duo since.
  • Alex has tried to explain that his reluctance has to do with an incident that involved Steve's first (and only) tamed wolf. Most pick up on what Alex is trying to convey and leave it at that.
  • A lot of people misinterpret Steve and Alex's relationship, thinking they are romantically involved. The two are really close and sometimes refer to each other as "partner," but it's all platonic.
  • Alex tried to use beds in a match against Ridley, once. It didn't go as Alex expected it would (though she still won the fight).
  • Sans did the usual "appear unexpectedly" shtick when he greeted Steve. Steve got startled and nearly punched him without thinking (and would have, if Sans wasn't so good at dodging).
  • Steve and Alex (and really anyone from the Minecraft 'verse except maybe the Ender Dragon) don't have genders. Steve predominantly uses he/they pronouns while Alex uses she/they.
  • Steve and Alex show Villager cool rocks and ores while Villager shows Steve and Alex cool bugs and fish.
  • I don't know Bayonetta that well, but I just have this feeling that Alex and Bayonetta would make good friends.
  • Alex knows more about redstone than Steve, though Steve does know how to make a simple sugar cane/bamboo farm.

Edit: fixed some typos.
